For helping keep this great

on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 103 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 103 | I pulled the left wheel off for the first time today. I wanted to see why my parking brake wasn't working. I figured it was the cables being seized. Come to find out, the cable wasn't connected to anything. There's nothing for the end of the cable to connect to.
The previous owner had put new brake cylinders and shoes on, but it looks like whatever the cable is supposed to connect to is missing. I'll post photos soon to show what I have.
The second issue is that it looks like the axle seal is leaking. Everything was soaked with oil. Is pulling an axle something I can do myself, considering I don't have have a lift or even a garage for that matter?
Thanks for your comments. By the way, I haven't looked at the right side yet to see what awaits me there. Hopefully tomorrow.

Digging through the box-o-parts that the previous owner gave me, I found two S-shaped pieces that look like they are the parking brake levers. They have the eccentric bolts on them, and look like they're ready to install! I'm going back in tomorrow to see if that's all I need, but I may have caught a break! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Yes, you can pull the axle yourself. Let us know if you get things worked out. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,721 back yard wrench turner | | back yard wrench turner Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,721 | Pulling an axle is a fairly easy job to do. Put the truck on jack stands, remove the wheels and drums. Take the axle cover off, be sure to have a drip pan under it. There are a couple of clips holding the axles in place. When the clips are removed, the axles will slide out. You will probably need to replace the oil soaked brake shoes also.
