MY 48 HAS A OUTSIDE KEY LOCK ONLY ON THE PASS SIDE DOOR.IS THIS CORRECT?

Yes. My 48's are the same as yours.

Back in the day, most streets were dirt. When you pulled up to the curb, in order to keep your shoes clean, you slid across the seat to get out on the sidewalk. Since you were getting out on the passenger side, that's where the lock was!

My 62 c-30 doesn't have a lock on either door. I guess a killer sound system won't be getting installed any time soon.

I have not heard the dirt street theory before, most of the time the theory is that streets were so narrow, that you risked getting hit if you exited or entered the truck on the street side. So you were expected to slide across and exit on the side next to the sidewalk.
I am not sure if a lock could be added - does the left hand latch mechanism have the locking feature like the right side? You cannot use the right side mechanism on the left.

I think cletis was being a little too subtle for us Kentucky boys . Generally, in email and on discussion boards, typing IN ALL CAPS is generally interpreted as shouting and is discouraged. Additionally, it is much harder to read text in all caps. Otherwise, keep asking questions, you're generating some great responses.

Most town is it still illegal to exit a vehichle form the drivers side. Just one of those laws that dosn't get enforced hardly at all.

I think this was a fairly common practice on most brands of trucks from this era. I know the old IHC's were set up this way. In fact, their forum had this same discussion last week! I think some of the F**ds were like this, too.

Go figure. I was just about to start a topic on this very subject.
My 46 1.5 ton has only the lock on pass side.
I checked, and the mech will not fit/work on the driver side without some major modification.
I am about 1 week from wet sanding/painting these doors and would LOVE to have a lock on the drivers side.
I'm guessing no aftermarket suppliers offer this option?

In fact I think some very early F**ds, didn't have driver's side doors.

Model T´s have only a moulding that appears to be a door...

The passenger side lock is Ok, you have to get used to it.

Besides, how many people could drive an old stovebolt?

How about my 52? Since it's push button has anyone every moved the passenger handle to the driver side on these? If so how would you lock passenger door from the inside?

I've moved the key mechanism pushbutton to the driverside on my 53, on the push button doors, all it locks is the button itself from being pushed so it works fine and the inside lock still works to. If the Door is locked from the inside (by pushing the handle forward) you can't open it with the key, they are seperate mechs.
Most of the parts houses, Carters, Chevy Duty, LMC sell a matched set of push button mechanisms if you want to have matching locks on both sides.

My 48 didnt come with a key for the ignition or the door. The ingintion switch just turns without a key and I never lock the doors. My wife bought me a nice tool box for the back that locks, so when I feel the need to sucure the truck from being stolen, I just unscrew the floor starter button and grab my revolver and lock them in the toolbox It can still be easily stolen, but not without getting under the hood. I dought if most people could figure out the floor button anyway.

Just find another pushbutton lock - it isn't hard, or expensive, to get the assembly matched to your existing key. Try eBay.

Will 53 door handles work on 48 doors?Does anybody know?
