Acrylic enamel is kind of an epoxy and needs hardener for the molecules to cross link and properly set up. If you are having the hardener harden up on you you can buy it in small quantities at your local paint jobber.

I used to use ac.enamel a lot, but never sprayed it with no hardener, mostly because I was told you can't color sand and buff un-hardened ac.enamel properly, and it won't resist gas, tar, salt etc. like Josiah said.
