Hi Guys ,I'm posting my mistake to help others avoid what happened to me .
I have to say complacency was a big factor here . I just did an engine swap for a guy on a 72 -C10 Chevy pickup . Straight 6 out V8 in .Well the 305 I used had a serpentine belt set up and there was no fan on the engine because they were going to use a electric fan on the truck we took the engine out of . I didn't want to go through the hassle to set up a electric fan . The bolt pattern was bigger than the one that was used on the 6 cylinder fan ,so off to the junk yard I went .I found a nice heavy duty six bladed flex fan with an adjustable bolt pattern , but couldn't find a spacer .Then it was off to the speed shop to buy a spacer . So I got home and installed all on the engine and fired it up . Strange it wasn't blowing any air ,the only air was coming off the blade tips.
Oop's, here is where complacency came into play.
This is the first time I really worked with a serpentine belt set up other than simple maintenance . On this serpentine belt set up the back side of the belt runs the water pump and fan so this means the engine turns clockwise but the water pump and fan turns counter clockwise .A standard V belt which I have been around most of my life all turns the same direction .So if you are going to use a stock Chevy serpentine belt set up you will need a reverse rotation fan and fan clutch and water pump made for this set up or you can order a reverse rotation fan that can be used with out a fan clutch like the one I mentioned above .
Not sure where to post this but maybe it should be put in tech tips or a sticky note here in the engine bay .
I hope this saves someone a bunch trouble that this caused me .

I encountered the opposite situation on a 63 Chevy II that the auto body shop instructor at the high school where I worked had restored. The car would run OK at low speed, and overheat on the highway. I discovered he had installed a fan blade from a Chevy Vega, which had a counter-rotating fan. At highway speed, the pusher fan would stop airflow through the radiator, but it would push air through it at around-town speeds.

Had the same thing happen to a man in town whose fan clutch had gone out.

He went to a wrecking yard to get another. Put it on and it would cool around town, but not on the highway.

When he finally brought it to me, I had him start the engine and it was trying to push me away from the front of the truck.

His was a serpentine set up, the clutch and fan he picked up were from a standard V belt set up.

Even though I think the original PO question has been answered I think this would be a good time to mention this.....
I used a 4.3 V6 brackets to bolt to the front of my 305 engine so I could run a serpentine belt. I had to buy a pump for the V6 and put it on my 305 as it turns in reverse with the serpentine system.
Hope this is a tip worth sharing.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile
