was the original outside mirror black?
round or rectangle I've seen assembly line pictures of round.

smooth back or stepped back?

I have seen smooth and "ribbed" backs (four ribs from the center out - 90 degree "pattern".

Maybe someone has a 1950 GM sales brochure with an illustration.

The shape of the driver's side mirror arm changed in 1951, because of the vent window (when opened, it would hit the older arm).

Here is a set of pictures that just may show the back of the mirror better. I added the extension arm late last fall.

I have to thank fellow 'Bolters Spanky + Brad for making it happen. I have yet to actually drive the truck with this new set-up. Some concern exists as to how much wobble may be experienced. I will know once April gets here to Michigan!

Speaking of the mirrors, does anyone make the backing support piece for the mirror arm base that is on the inside of the fender? Or if you made one, what did you use?

Those are not the original mirrors on my truck Gus.
They're 5" convex mirrors. The bracket is the original but the
mirror was cracked so when I replace it I used the convex ones.

I'm going back to black on my truck

When I went back together with it 5 years ago I got all shiny trim. I found out later that they came black, so I'm going to go with that.

See it n a few trucks and I like the look.

Black arm and mirror. Arm sweeps up.

Where can you get the Extension Arms for the mirrors?
My 1951 2 Ton has the brackets on the Fenders, cannot seem to locate the arm and mirrors.

Were fender-mounted mirrors a GM accessory?
