Is there any projects or related picture guides around? Thanks in advance. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2014 Posts: 19 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2014 Posts: 19 | Here is a pic of side rails on my 49. They were homemade and not a kit.. I used threaded inserts where possible so I don't have bolt heads or nuts on the inside of the bed. The entire assembly is held by one bolt in each of the stake pockets (factory) so easy to remove if needed. https://www.flickr.com/photos/advance-design_parts_co/8129206162/in/set-72157631867396207I don't recall seeing many kits available then maybe they are now? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 | Here are mine on my '54 3104. Each rail is 3-1/4" wide. The ends are roughly the same profile as the rear fenders. Standard zinc plated carriage bolts. Stainless would be better. Side rails were not a factory option. So make them any size and configuration that you like. I used Home Depot wood. Straightened the edges with my jointer. I filled the defects, then sanded / primed / sanded /primed / sanded / painted with rattle can paint. I actually made them TOO SMOOTH. Most people look at them and ask if thay are plastic. Moral of the story ... leave some grain pattern showing. > Full view> Closer view> Counter-sunk nuts on carriage bolts> PVC pipe holds flag pole ... I raise the flag at every show. - Lonnie

Boards from an old barn and toyed with the lengths and spacing until I was happy. I used acorn nuts and fender washers on the inside instead of countersinking, and I used carriage bolts. The Gulf signs were the finishing touch. I might put some boards across the front but I'm starting to like it without. I like the look of your rails. Have you got all dimensions for the wood. Rgds Tom | | |
