I removed the timing cover seal and replaced it with a new one, in place, not removed. While I did this I noticed there was a thin washer lookin thing behind the balancer and in front of the timing gear. It's hard to see exactly what this washer/spacer is, but it does have a keyway in it. The key in the timing gear is flush, so it doesn't catch the keyway in this washer, so the washer can spin freely without the balancer in place. My question is, what is this thin alien washer, and is the orientation/timing of it important? I haven't installed the balancer yet, and I tapped a 7/16" NF thread in the crank. Thanks in advance.

The numbers on this engine indicate that it is from a '56 car with a manual tranny. Anyways, is it just a washer, is it something else like a oil dipper or something different than just a plain washer? I can't see it completely so I don't know it's full shape. Also would like to know if the orientation of it is important.

Someone may have put it there because the last engine they rebuilt had one???
I'd do it like the repair manual says do it for your year engine.

It will make very little difference whether or not you use the washer, only slight belt alignment difference.
