In my 66 Suburban, I have the 292 motor with the smog pump and system. I need to rebuild my carburetor, but I am not sure if I have the correct carb or not. According to the 66 Shop Manual, there is a different carb for the non smog motor (7024009) and for the smog motor (7036009). My carb does not have a metal tag on it with the part number on it. Is there a way to identify my carb and does anyone know what the difference is between the 2 carbs, as far as a rebuild kit is concerned? Thank you for your help.

I had a carb decoding question once and fellow Stovebolter CARBKING was very helpful. Currently he is not set up to get PMs but here's a LINK to his CONTACT PAGE so you can ask him for help. I think he will know.

I agree Carb king will have the answer. He also sells kits. They probably use the same kit. The difference is in the jeting & carb kits don't have new jets anymore. It is probably a California truck. The other states didn't use that system until 68. Or the engine was replaced with a newer engine at one time. Is it a Roch. model B carb or a Monojet. If it is a MJ the number is stamed on the side of the bowl section.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

According to my Delco Carburetor catalog, the 7024009 fits 1964-1966 292 truck engines, the 7036009 fits 1966 A.I.R. 292 truck only. Bulletin #9C-3003T

Differences:

#7024009 ------- #7036009

7008672 --------- 7008671 --- main jet
7025554 --------- 7025554 --- power valve
7002896 --------- 7002896 --- power piston spring
701002 ----------- 7010002 --- power piston assembly

{ #7027093, intake air bleed valve assembly (A.I.R.) } only

It appears all the other parts are the same, jetting is one size leaner on the A.I.R. carb and possibly the power piston assembly, the catalog could have a typo on the numbers.

Over haul kit number listed (November 1971) #7016456

Hope this helps.

Joe

Thanks for your help everyone. Obviously there is a difference inside between the two, now I just have to figure out if I have the one I'm supposed to have.

Both will work for what you have, like I said, the Delco manual only lists the metering jet as being different, all the body parts and other internals are the same. Go with the best looking and most complete and you should be just fine.
