Hey guys,

About 4 months ago I purchased what was advertised as a 1950 Chevy 3600 with a motor from a 1954. It only came with a bill of sale, and unfortunately the door tag is no longer on there. I spoke with DMV who told me I need to have a Highway Patrol officer come check the vehicle out, then meet with a district judge to try and get a new title/VIN created. What a pain!

I have had a friend working on it for me as I don't have the time or space. Hoping to get it home within the next couple of weeks so I can finally drive it.

Had all the brakes replaced - wheel cylinders, lines, shoes, brake booster etc so at least I know it will stop. I'm on my phone right now so unable to post pictures, but will update with pictures when I make it to a computer.

Does this title thing sound correct? I was told to try and find a 1950 model that has been scrapp d and buy the vin plate/frame from it... Sounds like a lot of work and unsure of th legalities behind this. Any advice? Thanks

Swapping the vin from another vehicle and using the title from it is illegal.

DX3, at this point I'd follow the legal way albeit aggravating. Sounds like you are on the right trail. Check out some pictures in the gallery for what a 3600 looks like someone will probably will be along with some specifics. How many lug nuts ect may be indicator.
Do it once and do it right.....keep us posted on your title trail.

You will need to apply for a bonded title. A Google search of 'bonded title Oklahoma' lists several title services.

Do not take it to a Highway patrolman or show it to a judge without getting paperwork from a title service. You risk having it impounded and losing it.

It is always a bad idea to buy a vehicle without a title in a state that requires them. You need to get this straightened out before you sink any more cash into it.

dx3, The person at the DMV gave you some bad info. The easiest way to get it legal in Oklahoma is to file for a Title 42. Google Oklahoma Title 42 and you can view the process. You can do as Cletis suggested and do the Bonded Title route, it just takes longer. Do not take it to a Judge or show it to any LEO until you have some proof of ownership and are absolutely sure it is not stolen from a previous owner. If not tagged and titled along with insurance do not drive it on the street. If stopped, the officer, by law has NO CHOICE but to impound it and possibly put you in jail.

The find a 1950 title and purchase it, then get a repo VIN plate and attach it to the door post is done all the time. Since these trucks don't have numbers stamped on every part, it is easy to get away with doing this, even though it is illegal.

Don't give up, it can be done. Then hop in and drive the wheels off it.

Thank you guys for taking the time to respond, I truly appreciate it. I am LEO so I have to follow the rules. Some of us still do ;) Anyway, I'm going to look into doing this the right way and I will update you when that time comes. Hope everyone has been enjoying their holidays.

Well it could have been done by engine number.
with what you have you aren't going to get a normal
vin number that has meaning for a 50 because you have no idea
what the number was for the truck you now have.

the only way to get a vin that makes has meaning is to go the
wall art route essentially using the vin from a hulk that is beyond repair a parts truck.
kind of the inverse of doing a cab swap

it's done all the time with old stuff with no criminal intent

While the intent may not be there, with all the falsified vins on muscle cars, not to forget guys doing it on wrecked cars to resell them, these days, it's just not a good idea to do it that way. I know it may not really mean as much on these old trucks, but the law does not look at it that way. It could be a real problem if the truck ever gets resold and it pops up that particular serial number comes up as a scrapped vehicle.

513600, dx3 is a Law Enforcement Officer. If he were to do as you suggest he would be breaking his Oath of Office. I know that doesn't mean much to some but to those in the Brotherhood it means everything. He will do what is right and be proud of what he has when done.

I have had to file for lost title ,police had to come out check the v.i.n. after that no big deal . Had a trailer that needed a v.i.n. for a plate , it was home made job , police came out and he gave me a suggestion for a vin I made up one, he made out the paper , the title said home made and I have to have that vin plate on the trailer (stainless Steel ) no big deal but I was able to plate these vehicles leagally . So while it may be a pain , It would be a bigger one if you were cought breaking the law. Have fun .

Well, still didn't get the truck back. We were missing some clips (brakes) and still having trouble with unclear brake lines. Also the starter has been acting up. And when I say "we" I mean my mechanic as I have not seen the truck since I bought it over 3 months ago!

Well, we got the brakes done and now he tells me the front end steering doesn't feel good so some stuff there is going to need replaced. As well as the tires.

I really just want to drive this thing 4 miles for coffee... At this rate I should have just spent the money on one that was already completed!

Bought some new wheels from etrailer.com. Now looking for tires and whatever suspension issues I apparently have. Finally got o post a picture of
