With the info you provided, 6000 RPM, 3.23 rear end and SM420 and 28" tires you were going 154 mph.

Getting 6K from a stovebolt engine is about as likely as finding a chicken with lips. 3500 would be pushing things. What engine are you running, and what brand of tachometer?
The simplest way to get an accurate speed reading is to use a Garmin or TomTom GPS and compare the satellite info to your speedometer, then either adjust the speedometer drive gear teeth up or down or get a ratio-change box from a speedomerer shop. Jerry

3800 with dual rear wheels and a sm420, motor turning 6,000? Sounds like something is haywire here, not saying it can't be done but I'd sure be worried about shrapnel.
Thanks for fast responce,that was'nt 3800 or early bolt motor.62 1/2 ton panel with olds rear,punched out 292 with lots of miles.poor brakes,bad tires.but good enough to keep the pole with 12 cops in tow.45 mniles later i lost em.but had 3 worrents out by then.
oh yeah it was cheep electronic tach.motor only seen top rpms for a secont until that last night.with heavy oil it worked but last night was last time it ran,down 3 1/2 quarts of oil
