any good way to get the keeper that holds the door lock out so I can remove the lock mechanism? They seem to rust over time.

Find a way to get some PB blaster in there and pry on it with a big screw driver. Once you get enough of it protruding, grab it with vice grips and wiggle it while pulling it out. It won't come all the way out until you remove the lock.
