I'm thinking of picking up a 235cid with a powerglide tranny in hopes of swapping it with the 228cid 4-speed I now have in a 1953 GMC 3/4 ton. Has anyone done this or can it be done without a lot of mods? Is it worth the trouble since the current engine and tranny work ok except the lifters are noisy. My mechanical experience is only fair but I'm learning as I go here. Any thoughts?

It is a lot easier to adjust valves than to put a 235 powerglide in a GMC.

Bingo. You would gain nothing for all your hard work except a quieter engine that does not fit right. I like the sewing machine sound of the lifters. You can tell a lot about how your engine is running by becoming familiar with that sound.

I got a look at the engine and trans today and it was not exactly as advertised. The trans was a 3 spd manual and the engine has been sitting for 3 years so who knows what's still movable. I think by the sounds of it I'll leave well enough alone and keep what I know is working.

If the lifters on the 228 are excessively noisy in spite of repetitive adjustments, check the tips of the rocker arms at the valve stems. If there is a deep groove in the rocker tips, the wide feeler gauge won't read the true gap between the rocker tip and the end of the valve stem. The rocker tips can be dressed and polished to remove the grooves.
