| | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 20 | I installed my freshly painted hood on my 54 chevy and hooked up hinges , It goes down to about 2 in. from closing all the way. It is like it is stopped at the cowl in the back. I took the hood springs off and same thing . I disconnected the hinges and spring, the hood fits good , all the way down . This was a project truck and hood was not connected just laying on truck, I discovered it was a 53 hood , that should make no difference . They modified the front Hood Emblem from a 54 to fit the 53 , that threw me off . Any thoughts ?

There are some very specific procedures which must be followed closely and in the correct order. I had to write them down line-by-line to wrap my head around them, as I found the Manual's layout of the instructions awkward. BTW, keep us posted on your progress, as I am trying to put a 54 hood on a 49, and can't find a definitive answer whether it will fit. Or maybe we can swap hoods  Carl

Close the hood and if it lays down then tighten the bolts from inside the cab, raise the hood and then tighten the two bolts from the outside.
Then hook up the hinges and leave them loose.....let the hood weight settle on the springs and then tighten them up. I line up the rear of the hood for proper spacing at the cowl with the inner hinge bolts snug, but movable.
I then lift the the front of the hood enough to place a 4X4 block between the nose of the hood and the hood latch.
I then place a 16 inch length of railroad track on the rear of the hood to force it down on the cowl, and tighten the inner hinge bolts. (I believe that this step is the key to make it fit right.)
