I am taking my truck apart one piece at a time and removing the old paint.This sometimes means that a piece will sit up for an extended period of time after I apply the etch primer. How long can the piece sit before it has to be scuffed and the urethane primer added. Or does it ever need to be scuffed?

2nd question. Do I need to cut the parts in with final color or can I reassimble with primer only.

I can give you my opinion on one of your questions. I'd recommend triming out the parts before assembly. As for the primer, I have lightly
used an etching pad over the primer before applying the filling primer. Not sure if all brands of paint are the same or not.

This is something he is well informed in and works with on a daily basis. As always his topics are informative and well worth your time in looking into...give it a try

I did the same thing with a jeep and I let it sit with no paint on it at all in my dry garage for six months and it didn't rust. I just hit it with a metal wash before I primed it and it stuck really well. If you are storing stuff outdoors or in a wet location prime it right away.
