I want to remove the tranny(420) before pulling eng.can I just remove the shift lever,without removeing the top plate? will removing the roll pin allow me to do this?. thanks again.

Just remove the gear shift lever, disconnect (and move away) the drive-shaft, and remove the gearshift.

You do not need that special tool. Push the lever down and twist the lever. It is "spring-loaded" and will then pop-up/out.

More help may be found at the link below. Also I would caution you to remove the stick with the transmission in neutral. Don't mess with the pin, it is not a roll pin but two short alignment pins, once loosened they won't retighten correctly.

Guess I am at a loss as to why they won't work but ok. Get yourself a 9/16" socket, pull the 8 bolts and lift it out.

I had to spray quite a bit of penetrating spray into the collar to get it to loosen up. Used a set of adjustable pliers to grip it enough to wiggle it free.
Just time and patience required.

The spring on my shift tower cannot be compressed with finger pressure. The manual shows a tool but I use a monkey wrench, placed on it's side. That allows me to deliver enough force to compress the spring. Then, it turns about 15 degrees counter clockwise and it pops up.

2 good sized straight screwdriver or prybars, insert into retainer 180 deg apart. Press straight down until the retiner tangs clear the pins & apply pressure to rotate counter-clockwise. Retainer should come up & out. Taking the shift cover off will open up another can of worms!
