on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 | Im running a 235 out of a 62 Impala in my 49 pickup. Starts great every time Idles fine when cold but as temp starts to rise my idle speed starts to slow down, while driving if I come to a stop sign or red light it will completely die, I hit the starter button an it starts just fine but as soon as I take my foot off the gas it dies. I am running the stock Rochester one barrel. Do I need to get a carb kit an see if that helps or do I need to start looking for a new carb, if so any recommendations for a new carb? Thanks for any advice you guys can give me. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 568 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 568 | Is it an old problem or a recent engine swap?
I can explain it to you, I can't understand it for you.

Rebuilds are cheap and easy. How close is the fuel line to a heat source? Maybe it's boiling off at idle?

If you have a vacuum gauge, connect it to the manifold vacuum port and adjust the fuel/air mixture and idle speed to get the highest steadiest reading at idle.
IF the above doesn't correct it test for a vacuum leak at the carb, where it bolts to the manifold and where the manifold bolts to the head. Assuming you have an automatic choke, your symptoms sound like a vacuum leak, i.e. as the choke opens the fuel/air mixture leans out and a vacuum leak will make the idle mixture too lean to idle. Course when you don't know the history of a carb a rebuild is a wise move. Good luck Dave | | |
