| | | | Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 62 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 62 | Replacing parking brake on 1948 1/2 ton.I am having problem sliding the metal retaining clip at the end of the cable through the cable clamp,i tried spreading the clamp with a flat chisel.It goes about 1/4 of the way through binds.I am afraid if i spread it more it may brake the clamp.Am i wearying to much,or do you force rubber cable through opening on the clamps, any ideas ? thanks

Be careful, your fear of breaking it is correct (I broke one that way). Run an oiled round wire brush through the opening. I have (successfully) used a chisel to slightly/gently spread the edge of the clamp, and then slide in the metal end of the cable.

If I remember right, there was a small 'lip' in the middle which corresponded to a small indent in the original cable... But, I cannot keep the cable from pulling out of the clamp. The clamp is a smooth bore all the way through.
Actually, I seem to remember grinding down the overall diameter of the metal cable end in order to get it in the clamp...been too long. | | |
