I have seen an engine with the looks of a 1953-55 first series engine, like this one, but cast much later. That engine had the passenger side pan rail bulged out like the 1955 second series-63 engines(1953-55 first would be straight down both sides). I would check the pan rails to confirm.
I just re-looked at the pictures of this engine and see a raised circle above the starter. I have seen this marking on another engine which was reported to be a 261(maybe Canadian).

dave the pan rails do buldge out about half an inch. Yes there is a circle above the starter. my buddy says on the other side below filter, there are 2 looks like bolt holes but are solid. this makes him think its a 235 full pressure. keep the help coming and i will keep answering. I had 4 friends help me take truck apart and now it is just me putting it back together. I don't really know alot but with u guys help and me being persistent, i will try my best.

Its a 54/55 261 according to your numbers. Does this answer your question?

Yeah, all I can say is, the numbers, if read perfectly, is a 54/55 261. Since dirt and debris can change a 3 to an 8 or whatever, if its clean, and these numbers are good, its a 261.

I have seen so many anomalies with these trucks in parts, if seems that every now and then, maybe its Friday, the GM employee does the wrong thing and all comes together anyway. Maybe those captains bars are there.. you just cant see them. Let us know when you have taken the engine to an engine shop, had it shot peened and magnifluxed, and cleaned. Maybe it will all become apparent. Good luck! If its a 261 its a nice engine!

Jimbo, got caught up in your thread and one of the pictures triggered me to send you one more bit of info you may need. On the 261's it is crucial to have the oil passages on the block either run direct to each other, or through an oil filter, before you run it. Google chevrolet 261 engine, and you will find this mentioned in several places. Jim Carter has a great article called "The forgotten 261" Good luck with your truck!!

jimbo,

There are two oil filter lines. Those lines should not be to a port that has water inside.

There is a post on the block between the two oil ports. That post is the pivot for the throttle rod bell-crank. If you remove that post/bolt, coolant will come out. Some blocks have holes for two different pivot-post locations - one hole gets used for the post and the other hole gets a pipe-plug.

jimbo, look close at the end of that stud, the bell crank center hole slips onto the stud, probably with a washer on each side, the spring clip on the end holds it in place, the rest of the linkage hooks to either end of the bell crank to change the direction of motion between the pedal and the carb .... if you had that stud out [to find water behind it] best to insure you put some type of sealer on the threads
