Here's another question regarding newly installed 235. I filled the tranny with gear oil after installation. Today when rereading the shop manual I noticed that in the section about installing the engine (in a half-ton) it says to remove the speedometer gear and fill the rear-most part of the tranny with 1 1/2 pints of gear oil, to lube the universal joint.
So I did this, it took a whole quart of oil.
There is nothing about this in the section about installing just the transmission.
Have I misunderstood something? Do we need to fill two sections of the tranny?

Karl

The U' joint section just needs a little for initial lubrication.
Once the transmission is put in use it is kept full from the oil in the main case migrating back to it.
If you over filled the U' joint area the main case will end up over full.

The book (engine installation) says add about a pint, so I guess that gearbox is full.

I'll drain some from the main box tomorrow.

I just filled my tranny, ball joint yesterday. I found in the service manual to fill the ball/u-joint area with 1/2 pint of gear oil via the pipe plug at end of tail shaft. Which I did. I filled the transmission with oil until it ran out of the fill plug.

So, what is correct. 1952, 3 speed

Level with the hole when it's warm, 1/2" below when cold. Your
pinky finger should just be able to touch it cold when you hook
the first joint over the edge.

After a refill, check it a few times after you run it till the
level stabilizes.
