Can I find a bell housing that fits the 292 and the 55 three speed, Can I mount this bell housing into the panel truck? Will the drive shaft need to be changed? Will the radiator and hoses match up? Do I want to do this much to make it all work? One at a time and then decide.

All of Steve's post applies to your situation. The 55 trans should bolt up to the 292 but the 292 is a torque monster and the later (67?) and up fully synchronized 3sp would hold up a lot better. Use side mounts (Chassis Engineering) along with the trans mount; do NOT mount the engine on the front and trans on the back---it's too much strain on the bellhousing. I guess it comes down to your skills and equipment, it's not a weekend swap.

Why would this be when the original was mounted this way? Do you say this due to the increased power/torque of the 292? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 | The bell housings are different. The original engine/trans combination the mounts were on the front of the engine and on the bellhousing, none under the transmission. The later engines (230/250/292) had side mounts and the 292 is different in that the mount on the passenger side is more to the front of the motor. However if you can find a bellhousing from a later 6cyl or v8 truck, it will bolt to the original crossmember and you will be ok.
