Yes, it's been done many times. A search should turn up detailed info. All of Steve's post applies to your situation. The 55 trans should bolt up to the 292 but the 292 is a torque monster and the later (67?) and up fully synchronized 3sp would hold up a lot better. Use side mounts (Chassis Engineering) along with the trans mount; do NOT mount the engine on the front and trans on the back---it's too much strain on the bellhousing. I guess it comes down to your skills and equipment, it's not a weekend swap.
