I am going to put a sbc in my 1949 Chevrolet 3100. I have mustang II independent front suspension with 10 bolt rear end. Wondering what modifications if any had to be done to the shear metal. Such as firewall, floors, trans tunnel. Thanks in advance

You should be able to do it without any changes to the firewall.

It all depends where your engine is situated. You may need to make a small transmission tunnel in the floor but maybe not. You shouldn't have to touch the firewall.

Brown1998, I used this set up, and the mounts, for my 52 Panel and I could not be happier with it. I did not have to alter firewall, or floor board and I used the "big" distributor.

.... I did cut about 1/2" right at the top of the toeboard where the tranny came up to it. However, when I put the tranny cover in place you cannot even see the where I cut it.....and I mean only 1/2 inch just at the top.
Some folks modify the original rear cross member and some order one that bolts right in. Choices vary but it is not a hard job.

Good luck.

These trucks came with 6's in IMHO - everyone has a 350/350 combo.. like navels everyone has one.

If don't have the engine/trans yet have a look here:

Keep it inline with a modern GM inline 6 - 290 HP net

4200

It fits in with out having the hack the firewall. Even with the stock intake manifold.

Hey Marc,

That Atlas engine looks pretty short sitting in a AD chassis. Do you know by how much compared to a 216/235/261?

You can get the dimensions of the 4200 here:

4200 size

for sure they are 150+ # lighter than a stovebolt.

I don't have a stovebolt around to measure up.

I have made those measurements myself out of curiosity, the 216/235/261 and the 4200 Atlas are almost exact on length and width, with the 4200 only being about an inch shorter from the bottom of the block to the top of the cam cover.
