I have searched and can not find the details to decode a 1949 gmc canadian 1 ton pickup (i think 1949). The tag is as follows

model 9434
s/n 994340307L
engine x274433
body 2419
trim 394
paint 932

anyone have a location I can get info on this truck... or someone know what this data tells me about the truck?

Hy dirtball, your serial number breaks down as follows
9= year in your case 1949, confirm by body style
9434= GMC one ton on 137 inch wheelbase, left the factory as a
pickup truck
0307L is the regular production number
the original engine would have been a Chevrolet 216, hope that helps.

Did all the canadian gmc's use chevy motors? when did they switch (if ever) to the pontiac/gmc motors used in US versions?

Hy dirtball, Canadian GMCs that had a comparable Chevrolet model were powered by Chevrolet engines, this went on right up into the sixties, Canadian light duty GMCs never had the V6 engine they were powered by Chevy inline sixes and V8 engines. The larger Canadian GMCs were identical to their American cousins, hope that helps.

Thanks for the help.. If canadian gmc's used chevy engines are the frames the samexas a chevy also... Do they have the gmc style front crossmember? Will a gmc motor bolt in or is it a swap like when you put a gmc in a chevy?

Would the Canadian GMCs being discussed be AD (A-D, Advance Design) or ND (New Design)?

Hy dirtball, the Canadian GMCs that had Chevy engines used frames that were the same as Chevrolet frames in all respects. If you want to install a GMC engine in a Canadian GMC that was originally powered by a Chevrolet, then you will have to make up some type of mount for the front of the engine, hope that helps.

Thats exactly what i needed to mnow... Basically a chevy with gmc trim. I am dealing on a 49 gmc 1 ton pickup but needed to know my options .. Still dreaming of a AD 9 ft bed pickup with 302...
