im about 99% done with my 48 loadmaster, i've done the breaks, body, exhaust, dump....but the last thing is probably very simple to someone that has experience and i just cant figure it out
my truck starts and runs great, it has a 12 volt bat, 12 starter (great find) and a new 12 volt GM alternator, i just cant get the batt to charge or the truck to run off the alternator, there were 2 wires attached to the old generator that i hooked up to almost identical locations on the alternator, it'll run for about 15-20 mins until it sucks the life from the battery....any ideas's | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | vonguinness, I you want to call me at 518-732-7989 (Castleton), I would be pleased to either talk you through your wiring problem and/or come by and set up your wiring. Most likely it will be a simple matter of wiring your alternator through your ammeter to your battery (and bypassing the original voltage regulator). Or, post here the year/brand/style of alternator and people will try to help you get this correctly wired. I didn't read the entire article you linked, but it should be noted that vonguinness has replaced a generator with a alternator. Without going into the gory details, the generator grounds the field to produce the charge while a alternator relies on power to the rotor to create a charge.

Also, exactly what kind of 12v alternator do you have? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | vonguinness,
If you look in the 'Tech-Tips' at the top of the page, there is a article in the electrical tips on converting a 6 volt generator/voltage regulator system to a 12 volt system using a SI alternator. There are some errors in the tech tip, but it will give you a general idea.
