I'm doing a small block swap in my 49 3100 and I was wondering if anyone had any pics on how they modified the firewall for the bell housing and how they made the tunnel for the trans

headscratch

I've seen a lot done without modifying the firewall or floor. Are you doing any other mods or just this?

I agree….

Like 46GMCpu …..
I have a 455 Buick and a turbo 400 in my 51 panel and zero firewall or tunnel issues.
A small block should have loads of room without any firewall mods.

....52 panel. Installed a small block Chevy. Did not modify firewall. Used a BIG distributor and can still get my hand between the dist. and firewall.

I set my engine in using this layout.

EDIT: I did trim about 1/2" off at the front of the transmission hole where the tranny came against it when leveling the engine...but just a little.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

If I remember correctly, my '49 had the engine set so far back that a bump had to be put in to the firewall for a valve cover. Amongst other things. On my Suburban, everything tucked in nicely without modifying any sheet metal.
