Hello everyone. I have a 1937 1/2 ton chevy pickup truck wich is 99% restored , I need to hook up some brake lights and would like to add turn signals on the front and the rear. I was thinking of maybe using some round fog lights on the front for turn signals. I was looking for some suggestions for the rear. I dont know if there are any later model chevy tailights with turn signals I could use that would not look out of place? I have been looking through all the pictures in the stovebolt gallery for some ideas but have not seen any close shots of the back of the trucks. Any help welcome.

Thanks Mike

joe,

are you using those lights on your truck currently? they look like a good clean way to run blinkers.

In addition to Joe's suggestion above have you thought about buying a repop tail light assembly for the right side? I run two original styles. I did paint the inside of the housing with crome paint to give better reflection and it did. I also went 12 volt. Just a thought on the right side taillight.

Yes, I am using them currently both on the front and the back. In addition I custom fitted them into the rolls of my bed, on the back AND on the front. The ones on the front flash with the bumper bolts on the front causing some special attention to the turn signal set up. The back bed roll ones are wired into my brake lights giving me that "higher" brake light, plus additional brake lights now being suggested by the National Street Rod Association. All this, and it really doesn't show unless it is activated.

joe,

i saw the pictures of your truck, it is really nice. Do you think running just the bolts in the bumpers for turn signals is enough. are they easily visible to other drivers? i really like the idea of using them on my 39.

thanks,
thirtyniner

It's better, in my opinion, to interrupt the brake light on the side to which you are turning as was done until recently. Use the bolts for extra brake lights rather than as turn signals. Did the 37 trucks still have the front parking lights in the head light buckets?

Yes, they do Baldy and that is another posibility on the front. Using a two filiment amber bulb, the parking light bulb can become your front turnsignal. I don't care for this idea, however, as the amber bulb sitting in the bucket takes away from the original look of the truck, as does a right hand tail light, which can easily fix the rear turn signal dilemma.
As we are seeing here, there are several ideas as to how to overcome the turn signal dilemma. It's probably one of those personalized things. All I can tell you is that I have tried more than several arrangements over the 30 years I have owned my truck and what I'm using now is the best I've had. But that doesn't mean that as soon as tomorrow I won't see something that is better! grin

Mine has '40 park light mounted on the front fenders. They were on the old fenders when I got the truck, I liked the look so i cleaned them up and reinstalled them. I use 12 volts with extra bright bulbs. I want to be seen, and have people know which way I am going!

The turnsinals mounted in the grills or under the bumpers sure don't stand out in the day light, at least the ones I have seen. Get them as far out to each side and use as bright a bulb as you can get, they even make Halogen 1157, and 1156 bulbs now. I have heard they are bright enough to melt plastic lenses! Joe
