The guy who inspects my '49 each year has always complained about not being able to see rear tail light brake and parking lights light up in the sun. Got some halogen 1157 bulbs from JC Whitney and installed them, Much brighter and he's happier. In case someone has the same problem. | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 | Just a note of caution...those puppies run HOT. If you have plastic lens, they will/can melt. If you have glass lens, those bulbs will heat up the glass and when rain hits them they may crack. Have seen both of these problems occur on streetrods.

I'm thinking about them for the back of my '53, which as geezer says, the stock ones just aren't very bright. | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,383 Ex Hall Monitor | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,383 | There are few choices of 6V LEDs but they are available. Be aware that most are directional and from what I've seen personally the number of LEDs makes a difference. (more LEDs = more light) I use these and I'm quite pleased with them. They light the whole taillight & have substantially more LEDs than the other bulbs I've seen. You can get cheaper bulbs but the ones I've seen have fewer LEDs and are directional so they provide a "hot" red spot in the middle of the lens instead of lighting the whole taillight. 4ontheFloor was working on a project for making 6V LEDs but I'm not sure of the status.

Until they burn out anyways. Seems to me that the life is a little short for my tastes. I also tried the led bulbs. They would be fine for a lens not equipped with blue dots. The have to have the same color lens as the lamp illumination to work properly. The blue dots end up lining up with the lamp, and therby actually block some of the light. I ended up going with a Technostalgia conversion kit. It uses a panel of leds instead of a bulb. I further modified it to allow for a blue led behind the blue dot, so it has it's own lamp for illumination. There's also complete assemlies and replacement lenses that have leds built in, about 30 or so per housing. They look pretty good, too.
