this setup is a 283/TH350 combination.
I have messed around with different brackets and cable lengths to no avail. Can someone help?

It has nothing at all to do with shift points, which are controlled by the modulator. You need to adjust the cable to reach its maximum travel just as the throttle gets to the wide-open position. With the cable disconnected, you should feel an increase in the effort to pull the cable about 1/2" before it reaches a positive stop. That's the kickdown valve beginning to move. It needs to reach that stop point or very close to it just as the gas pedal hits the floor. Good luck!

Just behind the tangs that hold the cable in the bracket you should see a flat tab. If you push that tab in and hold it in, the with other hand move the carb to wide open. This should extend the cable. Hope this helps. Both those transmissions use the cable to control throttle pressure. The OEM cable for a TH 350 is non-adjustable. I think B&M and TCI sell an adjustable cable for the 350.
