To put it on an old truck would take some modifications namely the steering column. It would not be worth the effort. The original box will work good if it is in good condition & adjusted right.

Nothing is a bolt in, its going to take some fabrication. They are both reciprocating ball design.
If your 46 box is in good shape, or rebuilt, it is an excellent box.
I have put 1941-46 truck boxes in 1939-40 trucks many times because they are such a good box, and a simple bolt in for anyone wanting much improved steering.

The Vega boxes come in 3 different ratios, 22:1, 20:1 and 15:1. The stock Vega box I think is 22:1. Another problem the street rod guys have is the different pitman arm lengths. Both of those can make for miserable steering.
