old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | Long story, Last fall somthing shorted out and the wires from the alt. to the ammeter and from the ammeter to a relay then to the battery got hot. I replaced them but prior to the replacement my dash lights stopped working, the gas gauge jumps past full with a loud click. the radio doesn't work. All these things happined about the same time, other lights work and truck starts ok. On checking the fuses it appears that only 1 circut is hot, the juice just never seems to get there from the ign. switch, which is new. The battery doesn't run down and most gauges work. It just seems like I lost juice to the fuse box. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | forgot to add, windshield wipers, cigar lighter, hearter blower, not working either | | | | | Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 20 Member | | Member Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 20 | gazim west here mate, what truck are we looking at here ?

Stupid question, but do I have a voltage regulator on my truck if I am using a altenator? The schematic I have for the older trucks show one. but I can't find anything like that on mine and I did look well. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | good Idea Fred, will get on that right away. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | Replacing Light switch tomorrow will advise. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,029 Member | | Member Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,029 | Generators and early alternators used external voltage regulators; more modern alternators have voltage regulators integrated in the alternator. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | Light switch didn't fix anything Thanks baldy, clears that up at least, I have no voltage reg. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 | Gazim, check your fusible links by pulling on them.If they are bad(open circuit)they will stretch like a rubber band and not supply voltage to the one side of the fuses they power up.A sure sign is that you have no power on BOTH sides of some fuses.

These two black w/white tracer wires run from the horn relay to the inst panel, the other runs from the panel tot he starter relay. Pull your inst panel & check(untape & inspect)the harness behind it. The big pink wire from the ign. switch feeds the fusebox accessory side IIRC. You could also pull the fusebox & see if something is up there. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | Will try that this morning(its raining all day) I replaced the wires from the starter and alt' to the ammeter already, they had fried but not failed. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | Going to pull this thread tomorrow. Need a new one? or did I screw somthing up with my re-wiring?? It worked for about the first 10 min ok. | | |
