I don't want to add anything that will be externally visible. For the rear, I aim to use one double filament bulb that will serve as the regular rear light, and also as the brake light. This will leave an empty socket, previously occupied by the brake light bulb, that I can use for the turn signal bulb.
I have searched online for a socket for a double filament bulb, with no success so far. Does anyone know where I can find one? Also, how are these sockets fixed in place? Are they soldered, or is it a push fit?

I must be missing something on your idea. If the rig is not quite stock, that must mean it has two lights in back. If you add the dual filament bulbs you will have STOP and TAIL functions. Then you plan to use the other socket for a bulb to facilitate a TURN function.
If you were to STOP and signal a left TURN your lights would only show two bright lights. You would have a brake light illuminated in the same housing with a blinking turn light...what don't I understand. :confused:

I assumed you would do that. My question was having a brake light in the same fixture with a blinking turn signal. In a more conventional setup, the light that indicates the turn is actually a blinking brake light and the entire assembly goes from dim (tail) to a bright blink (turn/brake) and is very obvious.
Won't your scenario involve a bright lamp (brake) immediately adjacent to a blinking lamp (turn). It seems this wouldn't be obvious to a driver from behind.

You will not have to change the socket. On the front you can put the double contact socket in the parking lights & use them for turn sig. & park lights. They say money can't buy happiness. In my mind I picture a couple of small round taillights brightly illuminated with the brake filaments, and right smack dab in the middle of that bright light, I see another filament of the same size trying to 'blink' a turn...seems like a lot of red on red to me. I think it's part number 6251 or somewhere in that area. I got two from NAPA last week. They consist of two wires to the fiber board plate, another lower fiber plate and the tension spring. They will fit down inside your existing socket nicely. If necessary, sand off one of the little nibs on one side of the fiber plate to allow them to go in easier. Then, since your socket is for a single filament bulb, the indentations on the sides inside the your socket will be at equal heights but the dual filament bulb locking nibs are at a higher and lower height. Simply file off some of one of the brass nibs on the bulb and insert it into your original socket and turn to lock the bulb. The one longer nib will seat fine and the filed nib (if you didn't take off too much) will keep the bulb tight. I am doing this on some front parking lights of my '49 to make them park/turn.
