Popping out of 2nd or 3rd is usually the syncro. Popping out of 1st is generally more serious like a worn cluster gear and slider gear. All of the above parts are expensive to replace if purchased new. However, these transmissions can be picked up at swap meets relatively cheap. The (4 bolt side cover)long tail housing units and the short ones are basically the same the only difference being the main shaft and tail housing. If you find a long tail housing trans for a reasonable price you may be able to make one out of the two and use your tail housing.
