Sheesh, two bulbs...what will they think of next!
The brake light switch should have two terminals on it. One side is powered (and fused??) all the time. The other side of the brake light switch goes directly back to the taillight.
Either wire could be brake or tail. The indication of a 'stop' with the taillights on would be the illumination of the second bulb, hence a brighter taillight...WOW.
