I just got some new oil filter lines from American Classic. The tubes themselves have brass fittings on the ends, but the bottom ends also have steel swivel-type connector fitting. When I went to thread the steel fitting into the brass T fitting at the engine block (this T fitting also connects the oil gauge tube), the threads in the T fitting started to strip.
I checked all of the fitting threads with a caliper. It's kind of hard to tell since the thread length is only about 3/8", but I believe the new hoses have taped threads (there's about a 0.010 inch difference from one end of the thread to the other).
I checked the old hoses and the T fitting, and they seems to be straight thread. Most of what I've read on this forum seems to talk about tapered threads though. If I have to replace the T fitting (which I'm guessing I do), I want to make sure I get the right fitting.
Last thing I want to do is to mess up the threads in the engine block. I guess that may be unlikely, since the brass fitting would strip before the block threads, but I still don't want to take any chances.
Does anyone know if the T fitting for the block should be tapered or straight threads? Any other insight on these hoses and fittings?
