8 volt batteries are obsolete. NO battery dealers in my area, including the one I work for, even bothers with keeping them in stock.
Properly maintained, 6 volt systems work fine. I know plenty of guys with 6 volt tractors that sit outside that fire right up, even in the dead of an Illinois winter.
