brokenhead's advice is, as usual, excellent. Those dis-assembly details (identifications marks, notes, and photos) are not stressed in the Shop Manual, but those steps are especially important for someone not familiar with a 216 and/or not experienced in rebuilding an engine.

I took apart and assembled a 216 in 1969 and had no experience with any aspect of any engine. I had a Shop Manual and a new Craftsman tool box. There were some very helpful dirt-track racing mechanics who answered all my many (stupid) questions. I also lucked into finding a friendly and helpful machine shop.

That rebuilt 216 ran for many years.
