Di-electric grease decreases conductivity. It might not have caused any harm. The shaft usually turns a moving contact inside the switch - the shaft is not a conducting part, I think. Just rotating the knob/shaft might help to clean the contact surfaces of the rheostat.
Contact cleaner sprayed on the non-greased contact surfaces in the rheostat usually helps.
