I can be a Jr. Electrician today...IF..you have turn signals and a flasher set up, the wires are headed in that direction.
The brake light circuit should be fused. It will go through a brake light switch which is either actuated mechanically, or I think in your case, hydraulically by the pressure switch on the master cylinder.
If you have turn signals or flashers, remember that a turn signal is a brake light that is blinking. I don't know if a '55 had factory turn signals..maybe you have something like a Signal-Stat aftermarket attachment on your steering column.
As you have discovered, each brake light has its own wire. When you step on the brake, both wires are energized. When you step on the brake when making a left hand turn, the right brake light comes on to indicate STOP, but the left brake light now BLINKS as it is switched by the turn signal blinker.
You probably wanted a specific location...I don't know, but at least you know where to look.
There should be quite a few wiring diagrams around for your rig. Someone will pop in with exactly the correct wire color and wire location...I just know it.
