Do you have an ammeter? Does it point to negative all the time?
If you don't get a spark as 1212 suggests then you can hook an ammeter between negative and cable and check for a load. But only if you don't get a spark, or your ammeter can read a minimum of 10 amps. Otherwise you might pop the meter's fuse.
