If a NOS GM seal is used or a seal from Best Gasket and properly installed along with proper bearing clearance set you will have no problems. As mentioned you can have the block machined to update a full circle seal, this can get expensive.
Sometimes just stick to the basics that have worked for years and get back on the road.
