Yes, millions of engines were sealed with rope. If you used a seal from a modern kit, then its probably a bad seal. The manufacturers took out the asbestos years back and the seals just fall apart with out it. Best Gasket Company now sells a very good replacement. It holds together like the old stuff and works great.
