Something worth mentioning, though it doesn't really apply to older vehicles, most vehicles built after 2011 do require synthetic oil, some (Cadillac and Corvettes) have required it at least since '99. There are also some cases where synthetic is only choice, as the weight oil required is not available any other way, 0W-20 used in many Toyota and Honda vehicles for example.
