Base coat will fade to a totally flat surface with no shine at all in a matter of a few weeks unless you protect it with clear. Add flattening compound to the clearcoat if necessary, but basecoat should NEVER be exposed to the elements before the clear is applied. Let the basecoat dry overnight and wet sand with 600 or 1,000 grit before applying the clear if it's been more than 30 minutes between the base and the clear application.
