english54, timing would be a good starting point. The edlebrock is one of the simplist carbs I've seen. They usually have a video with each new carb that shows a guy taking one apart and how to adjust one if your not familiar with them. If you don't have one I'm sure some garage or friend should have one laying around out of a new box.
As FYI one of the things that Edlebrock cautions folks about is changing the metering rods "willy nilly" and they tell you if your going to change the rods to use the guide in their book, which I think your are, to make sure they "match". I've never had to work on one other than adjust it just a little, when I got the engine running. I have one on my 37 for over 10 years without any problems except the gas gummed things up after sitting for a long time. I took it apart and cleaned it and it ran just find. I also put one on my panel and for "out of the box", and for the money, they are hard to beat. Biggest problem some folks have is OVER carbureting and engine!
