Have one of your boys crank while you check the spark. You shouldn't have to connect spark plug directly to the coil to see spark. If you Don't see a spark when it is properly hooked up, double check your points. Since you have spark at coil you might try replacing the condenser, I have had them fail after sitting for long periods of time. Improper timing can cause hard starting also.
