Ok...this is quite simple, think of it as adding an extra outlet next to the garage door opener in the garage.....

An alternator WILL work much better than a generator for what you are trying to accomplish because the alternator is able to provide a constant output at idle and low rpms where as a generator does not. As you know solid state devices will have a longer life when they run on a constant voltage.

So what you need is an alternator from a 1973 thru 1985 GM Vehicle, which will have an internal solid state regulator. Next you will need a DA Plug to wire the alternator into your original system, and the DA Plug will come with the instructions on how to do all of that.
