I to call BS, its only for kick down! I have been running mine over 12 years with out one, dad used his the same way for years. It shifts just fine with out it. I manually down shift mine if needed, and thats not very often, mostly when horsing around. The 250 has enough torque to pull my truck with out shifting down.
It wouldn't be that hard to run the cable into the firewall and have the lever from the foot feed pull it. Hook it up just like a throttle cable just below your throttle rod. The cable has a adjuster on it so set it for full pull when the foot feed hits the floor. You can then use your same set up you have now, all it would need is a small washer welded to the foot feed lever and a 1/2" square hole cut in the fire wall.
