Just moving the shifter handle to the "2" position, one notch to the right of Drive, does the same thing as moving the kickdown cable. The only difference internally is that the front band doesn't apply. That one only works in the forced 3-2 downshift mode. It adds a bit of strength to the 2nd. gear postion to handle full throttle torque.
