A bearing in the water pump or generator/ alternator could be a good candidate, but I think the starter would go ahead and turn it. The belt would likely slip. But it would be good to check those.
Checking the oil for metal is another very good idea too. If there is any in the bottom of the pan, it should show up when he drains it.
