Before I went nuts taking the engine apart, I would grab a rubber hose, or mechanics stethoscope and give the engine a going over. If you can pinpoint the location of the noise first, it might save you some headache. It might be a lifter banging on the rocker lube tube or something just as silly. Try to find what it is first.
